Looking directly south of Guatay Ranch you will see Guatay Mountain, looming up like a giant wigwam. Its massive frame is covered with a thick robe of velvet foliage and plumes of the rarest cypress found, known as Tecate Cypress. The mountain watches down over the Guatay valley bearing its name, once the winter home of the Cuyamaca Indians. They called these rare trees Eel-sha-har, meaning “Grows Only There”. You can still view the rare Tecate Cypress today looking south from Guatay Ranch... on the north ridges of Guatay Mountain, where they have stood for centuries.
